Updates - Forum Business
Change of forum name: At AGM 2015 members were invited to select a new name for the forum from a list of three suggestions. Those were:
- Swindon Seniors Forum,
- Swindon 55+ Forum, and
- Swindon Older People’s Forum.
Swindon Seniors Forum won the vote by a show of hands.
SSF Finances and Funding: SSF was one of the beneficiaries of Waitrose Community Matters token scheme in September, the forum received £260.00. The cheque was received by our Chair Norma Thompson. We would like to thank Waitrose and their customers at Swindon who supported us on their green token scheme in September. The collection box has helped raised awareness for SSF.
Website: The domain name will be changed before February 2016 to reflect the new name of the forum. In the meantime, please continue to use this website.
Updates - Activities of the Committee
Meeting with Local MP Robert Buckland: The meeting with Robert Buckland was informative and focus was on pensions, bus passes, commissioner for older people in England, loneliness and housing.
Media savvy training: Two Management Committee members attended a media savvy training day at Swindon Radio 105.5 station.
Care Cap: The Care Cap was supposed to come into force April 2016 meaning that those with assets more than £118,000 could be sure that the maximum amount they would have to pay towards care would be £72,000, (not including £12,000 a year for accommodation). With the delay, those with assets of £23,250 will continue to pay in full for their care.

If you are injured or feeling unwell but are not sure what to do: Call NHS 111 at any time of day or night - 111 calls are free of charge.
Callers at Home:
If you are in doubt then do not open the door!
Always ask to see identification.
If anyone calls at your home unexpectedly, claiming to be an official from an agency or from a utility company, either ask them to make an appointment or ask to see their identification then call the company or agency they said they represent.
- Genuine callers will not mind if you ask them to remain outside while you close the door and phone the relevant agency to check that they are bona fide.
- Remember, do not use a phone number that they give you, look up the phone number yourself.
- A genuine official will not mind making an appointment to come back another time.
If you see anything suspicious in your area, please report it to the police on 101 and if you feel you are in danger call 999 immediately
Tribute to SOPF founder Dave Brown
SOPF was set up in 2011 by Dave Brown and Carol Brownlee to be a voice for Swindon’s older citizens, the aim of the forum was to ensure that members were better informed on issues including isolation, loneliness, housing, transport, state benefits and social care. Dave worked tirelessly for other charities.
After stepping down as chair in 2014 he continued as the official treasurer until he passed away suddenly in August 2015.
Swindon Seniors Forum would like to make the following appointments:
